I've been hired to photograph a wedding next month. I am thrilled to say that I'll be working with an established client. This is exactly what I want to do - I hope to be your "family photographer" - the person you think of when you have an occasion, event, or even a business situation that requires some photos.

I'm very excited, but seeing that I've sort of been on leave of absence, I feel the need to sharpen my skills! I was looking back at photos from the last wedding I shot, and I sure have learned a lot since then!

Now that I'm in a position to re-focus on my photography, I can buckle down and prepare for this event. It will be laid-back, small, and somewhat casual - but it's still a wedding. I need to bring heart, hope, and love to the story. I am excited about the project, and looking forward to a change of pace. I am grateful to be better-equipped - not only with more photographic skill and knowledge, but with more powerful and useful equipment as well. These things will allow me to be more fluid throughout the day, so I'll be more capable of capturing beauty in each moment.

Well, as promised, my new bracket, umbrella, and backdrops arrived late last week. I've been playing with them a little. I used my dog as a subject first, and then moved on to myself! So, for your enjoyment, a very whimsical portrait of yours truly - with balanced, intentional lighting!

This little girl cannot be described in words. She is so little and delicate and soft and sweet. And I think it shows in the pictures. I was glad to catch some gleaming in those dark, mysterious eyes. I feel so lucky to have the chance to meet her on my trip to Iowa. Every moment is fleeting, and how can you possibly hold onto this one but through a picture?

I think we have a future heart breaker here. This little girl was such a sweetheart. She really wanted to just go play at the park, but we managed to have enough fun before that to get this one!

And we got so lucky - she sat in this splash of sunlight all on her own. What kid does that during a photo session? This little angel, I guess!

There is something really special about this little boy, and it's his EYES! They're enchanting, and oh-so-blue! (gotta love the drooly face too!) Thanks for a really great day, you guys. I sure had fun.

This picture just makes me think about how lucky this little guy is! Look how his parents adore him - and he knows it! Oh, to be a kid again...

So when do we play?

I am having the best time working on pictures of this little girl. She was so confident during our session, happy to lead me around her yard and come up with fun ideas for pictures. My photos always turn out the best when they begin with my subject's ideas - it makes them real, and helps portray their true spirit. As a mother, I know that's what I want to capture. Family photography is about memories and cherished moments. This little 4-year-old will be a 5-year-old the next time I see her. But here she is, in all her splendor, 4 years old forever.

I'm feeling a little artsy today, so I thought I'd share some of my more "out there" pictures from a recent Iowa session. This little guy was so talkative, and such a great spirit. We were working in scorching heat - I couldn't have asked for a sweeter kid, and a nicer family!

So I see it's been 7 days since my last post. In that time, I've flown on 4 airplanes, photographed 7 families, tidied my house, and hosted a party! I've got lots of great pictures to share from my trip to Iowa City, but it will have to wait. Great Art takes time and patience, my friends. Time and patience!

While on my trip, I managed to break my beloved SB-600 Speedlight... maybe that's a good thing. I'm always up for a challenge, and things like this force me out of my box. I've developed a fun little hand-held flash technique, so I'm sure I'll be armed with a new (or repaired) flash in the near future.

Okay, okay, so I've already caved. You got me! Here is one of my very favorite images from this year's Iowa excursion. This shot was taken in this family's beautiful front yard. If only I could have such a blissful welcoming every day when I came out to face the world...
